Alameda Pediatric Dentistry’s Dr. Sharine Thenard and new associate, Dr. Adam Shaffer, would know.

While both have lived, worked, and studied elsewhere, from Los Angeles to Ohio, coming back to practice dentistry in their beloved home town was a natural step.

“I grew up on the Island and was even a patient of this dental practice many years ago,” Dr. Thenard says. “Today, my friends and acquaintances from as far back as elementary school come in to have their kids’ teeth checked.”

Alameda Pediatric Dentistry’s “Woman Who Dares”

Recognized for her volunteer work in Jamaica, where she led a team of Alameda and Pleasanton Pediatric Dentistry staff in providing dental care to needy children last year, Dr. Sharine Thenard has been named one of the 2012 Women Who Dare by Girls, Inc.

“I am so surprised and flattered!” Dr. Thenard says. “To think that I would be viewed as a role model to girls and young women also makes me very aware of the responsibility I carry.”

Girls, Inc. is a national, non-profit organization that inspires girls to be “strong, smart, and bold,” and the program’s annual Women Who Dare Awards Event honors adult and teenage women making a difference in the community. This year’s honorees include Dr. Jannett Jackson, College of Alameda President, Sarah Olaes, Enrichment Program Director of the Alameda Education Foundation, and Mi-Anne Chan, Founder of the Roots and Shoots Club at Alameda High School.

In addition to her field work in Jamaica last year, Dr. Thenard is highly dedicated to the work she performs in the dental office on a daily basis. She is an important representative in her field, serving as a Diplomate for the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, a Trustee for the California Dental Association, and a Secretary for the California Society of Pediatric Dentistry.
